Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Are Engaged!

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle return to Kensington Palace after announcing their engagement

The King of Hearts is officially off the market.

Earlier today Clarence House announced that Prince Harry is engaged to American actress Meghan Markle. The rumor mill had gone into overdrive in recent days with reports that the couple had secretly been engaged for some time. Last week, Meghan arrived in London having moved out of her home in Canada. Today's official announcement revealed the couple got engaged last month.

Harry, 33, and Meghan, 36, have been dating for sixteen months and are believed to have met when the prince was visiting Toronto where the actress was living while filming her role as Rachel Zane on the popular legal drama, "Suits." The couple held hands and kissed for the first time in public at the Invictus Games held in Canada earlier this year.

Meghan, who grew up in California, was the subject of a Vanity Fair profile last month where she described being happily in love with Harry. She recently announced she would not be returning to "Suits" after wrapping her seventh season with the show. Royal watchers took these events as signs an engagement was imminent.

For today's photocall, Harry selected the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, a favorite spot of Princess Diana's. The couple beamed with happiness as Harry told one reporter that he knew Meghan was "the one" the first time he met her. He declined to offer any details on the proposal. This evening, the newly engaged couple will be interviewed together for the first time on BBC as his brother, Prince William, did when he announced his engagement to Kate Middleton.

As was also the case with his brother, Prince Harry paid tribute to his mother in his selection of an engagement ring for his future wife. He designed Meghan's ring using two diamonds that belonged to Diana to surround the central diamond from Botswana, where the couple has gone a photo safari. The stones are set in a gold band. The ring was made by Cleave and Company, Court Jewellers and Medallists to the Queen.

When Diana died, both boys selected several items to keep that belong to their mother. Prince Harry selected Diana's engagement ring but gave it to William when he decided to propose to Kate Middleton, now the Duchess of Cambridge.

As dictated by royal protocol, Harry, fifth in line to the British throne, needed permission from his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, to marry the American divorcee. The Queen is reportedly "delighted" for the couple. Harry held off announcing his engagement so as not to overshadow his grandparents 70th wedding anniversary which they celebrated last week. Harry also reportedly asked Meghan's parents for their daughter's hand in marriage.

The couple have announced their wedding will take place in the spring. It will likely be planned for some time after Prince William and Duchess Catherine welcome their third child which is due in April.

Harry and Meghan are planning to move into Nottingham Cottage in the grounds of Kensington Palace next door to his brother William and sister-in-law Kate.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said in a joint statement: 'We are very excited for Harry and Meghan. It has been wonderful getting to know Meghan and to see how happy she and Harry are together'. The boys' father Prince Charles said 'very happy indeed' for them.
